Marine Ecology Field Quarter makes a splash in Corsica, France
The fall quarter field class spent a month conducting diving and lab experiments based out of STARESO field station in Corsica, France. Of the 32 students, 15 were scientific SCUBA divers and 17 students used snorkel and shallow breath-hold diving to complete their research projects. In total, the class completed over 620 SCUBA dives and 275 snorkel/freedive excursions in 4 weeks. The class even made the French news. Athletics and Recreation renews SCUBA reimbursements for fall quarter.
A&R will reimburse up to 25 currently enrolled students $500 per student who complete a basic/open water off campus. Certification must be completed and reimbursement requested submitted by Dec 5th, 2025. For more details see the A&R announcement here.

Increased to 50 currently enrolled students $500 each who complete a basic/open water, advance, and/or rescue SCUBA certification, up to a max of $1,000 per student. UCSC's Global Change Ecology Field Quarter - A Huge Success in Sitka, Alaska - Updated on 4/1/2025
The winter quarter field class spent a month diving, surveying the intertidal and conducting lab experiments based out of the Sitka Sound Science Center. The field portion of the class was an overwhelming success with 18 student scientific divers and 5 instructional staff conducting over 250 dives accounting for 9300 minutes under the frigid 40F water. This included shore dives and dives from 3 different boats, in support of 4 undergraduate and 1 graduate student project investigating kelp forest soundscapes, macro algal communities, abalone morphology and subtidal zonation patterns. Thank you everyone for such an awesome trip!

Beginning Monday, December 11 and continuing through Friday, December 15, campus will conduct final in-person interviews in the search for the director of Athletics & Recreation. Campus leadership invites all UC Santa Cruz community members to participate in the process and provide feedback on the four finalists. Each finalist will meet with campus constituencies on campus for one day.
